Here is the much awaited (or so I hope) second part of Big Idea 1: Spectroscopy. Let’s go over a few key points first!

  • Spectroscopy is the study of matter using light.
  • Light is Energy. Light is not just visible, but the entire Electromagnetic Spectrum: you know – radio waves, microwaves etc.
  • Light is made of particles called photons. And it is these photons that carry energy. In fact, each photon carries energy = hn. Your main equations here are:

  • There are many types of spectra (the result of spectroscopy): mass spectra, photo electron spectra, emission spectra, absorption spectra etc. And they are really easy to understand!

Keep watching for a brief overview of spectroscopy!
